Pre-referral work-up


All referrals should comply with referral standards and include in particular:

  • History of condition
  • Examination findings including vaginal dryness/atrophy
  • Menopausal status


  • Pap smear
  • High vaginal swab

Interim/GP management

Consider use of topical oestrogen for vaginal atrophy.

Consider treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis, if appropriate.

Support and counselling

  • Report further episodes
  • Encourage return if symptoms recur / change

Urgent / category 1

High level -Abnormal pap smear

Routine / category 3

  • Low level abnormal pap smear
  • Recurrent, troublesome or embarrassing
  • Resistant to treatment

Red flags are clinical indicators of possible serious underlying conditions requiring further medical intervention. They may or may not indicate an emergency.

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review and the referral must be faxed.

We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
