All referrals should comply to referral standards and also include:
- History of recent travel
- History of contact or family illness
- History of animal handling
- Co-morbidites especially immunosuppression or Diabetes Mellitus
- Current treatment and failed treatments
- Description of any rash
- Blood cultures
- Viral swabs of vesicles
- Consider testing for Malaria, Dengue fever, Ross River or Hepatitis A if indicated

Systemically unwell with rigors
Systemically unwell with non-blanching rash.
Red flags are clinical indicators of possible serious underlying conditions requiring further medical intervention. They may or may not indicate an emergency.

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review and the referral must be faxed.
