Pre-referral work-up


Southern referrals: Consider suitability for outpatient hysteroscopy – see pathway

All referrals should comply with referral standards and include in particular:

  • Menstrual history including details of menopause
  • Medication history (contraception, HRT particularly oestrogen only regimens)
  • Sexual history including history of PID
  • Examination findings including any genital tract abnormalities (polyps, abdominal mass)


  • Pap smear
  • HVS
  • Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound
  • Pregnancy test (unnecessary >55 years)

In the THS Southern Region women suitable for outpatient hysteroscopy may be referred directly by their GP without the need for a Gynaecology Clinic appointment  - see referral pathway.

Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review.
