The Department of Paediatric Surgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital provides a statewide service to babies and children up to and including 14 years of age, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Scope
Non-medical circumcisions are not performed.
Emergency conditions
Acutely unwell children should be referred to Emergency Department.
Referral process
A referral (preferably faxed) is required for all new appointments and must conform to the Referral Standards as outlined on For Clinicians.
All Paediatric Surgical referrals are triaged according to clinical guidelines.
Generic referrals (eg To Paediatric Surgeon) will be distributed amongst three consultant Paediatric Surgeons and booked according to urgency and waiting time
Referrals with named consultant will be booked into the named consultant's clinic. If the consultant is away for a period of time and the matter is of some urgency, the referral will be triaged to the other consultant Paediatric Surgeon.

*MCH and NWRH MOICs request GPs call them prior to referring a patient to ensure the patient is being sent appropriately to a safe destination.
Urgent / category 1
Urgent referrals should be accompanied by a phone call to the Consultant/Registrar to organise urgent review and the referral must be faxed.
We will endeavour to see these patients within four weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.
Semi-urgent / category 2
We will endeavour to see these patients within 12 weeks
