The Department will periodically contact patients waiting for an outpatient clinic appointment via SMS, with a link to an electronic form.  This is part of routine waitlist auditing to ensure patient details are up to date.  If you receive this SMS, please update your details.

24hr Ambulatory BP Monitoring

Direct referral for a ABPM can be made without review by a cardiologist. All referrals should comply to referral standards and also include:

  • Clinical indication for test/associated symptoms
  • Hypertension history
  • Past and family history
  • Cardiac risk factor assessment
  • Co-morbidities especially cardiac, renal and endocrine disease
  • Medications
  • Should include BP readings

Dobutamine Stress Echo

Referral by cardiologist only.

  • This test is usually indicated for patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease and evaluates the heart muscles response to stress and therefore may reveal potential blood flow problems to the heart. It can also provide information about valvular disease and pressure within the chambers of the heart
  • This test is advised for those patients unable to walk on a treadmill

Exercise Stress Echocardiogram

Referral by cardiologist only.

Tests

Assess patient has the ability to walk at a sustained pace on a treadmill machine for up to 10 minutes and is not impaired by muscular-skeletal disorders, osteoarthritis or peripheral vascular disease

  • ECG
  • CXR

Patients should withhold beta blockers on morning of procedure

Inability to walk on a treadmill means the patient cannot sustain walking long enough to increase heart rate to the required stress level, therefore rendering the test pointless

Patients should be informed to wear loose fitting clothes and appropriate walking shoes

Exercise Stress Test (EST)

  • Clinical Indication for request/patient symptoms
  • Onset and nature of any chest pain
  • Cardiac risk factors
  • Cardiac history medications

Assess patient has the ability to walk at a sustained pace on a treadmill machine for up to 10 minutes and are not impaired by muscular-skeletal disorders, osteoarthritis or peripheral vascular disease

Also known as Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT)

Indicated for patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease.
